I honestly think Sakurai tried too hard to make this a "good" story mode.
Not only is it way too redundant, but parts of it doesn't make sh*t sense at all. For example, Peach gets caught in a big-ass explosion on the Halberd and somehow survives. I'm not one for questioning game logic, but if I've learned anything from video games, it's that you don't come out of an explosion without a scratch.
Also, some of the boss fights seem very out of place, specifically Petey Pirahna, Galleom, and Rayquaza.
1) Petey Pirahna has no real reason to be inside an arena, and just comes out of nowhere. 2) Galleom is "conveniently" located in a desert, where Ike, Marth, and God are. 3) What in the hell is Rayquaza doing in the water? He lives in the ozone layer. Get your facts straight, Sakurai.
There's also the fact that the levels are over-infested with enemies. I'm not going to go into detail here, as it's pretty self-explanitory.
It almost seems like Sakurai woke up that morning and said, "I'm not gonna direct today! I don't know what I'm gonna do, but it's not gonna be directing!".
